What is Propolis?

Propolis is the sticky resin which seeps from the buds of certain trees.  Sometimes called "bee glue," Propolis is blended with ‘flakes’ secreted from special glands on the underside of the bee's abdomen.  It is used by the bee to; reduce the size of the hive entrance, plaster up unwanted holes to the outside, cover over and sterilize dead organic matter [insects] that are too large for the bees to remove, line and sterilize the interior of brood cells, and lastly to keep the hive antiseptic.

Propolis offers antiseptic, antibiotic, antibacterial, antifungal, and even antiviral properties.  Part of the antimicrobial properties against various bacteria and fungal infections is due to galangin, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid.

Research shows that New Zealand Propolis has the highest readings of flavonoids (anti-oxidants) when compared to Propolis from around the world.

Recent studies show that Propolis has the ability to suppress the growth of neurofibromatosis tumours by more than 90% over 100-day tests making it 40% more effective than the first natural anti-cancer treatment known.

What to use and how…

Honey & Propolis

Is a delicious combination of Propolis Extract and NZ Clover honey that’s always a good defense at the first signs of a sore throat.  Dissolve one teaspoon as required in your mouth or use it in a hot (not boiling) lemon drink.

Propolis Tincture & Extract

This is a concentrated form of Propolis that can be used neat in a number of ways.  A few drops can be applied to athletes’ foot, mouth ulcers, cuts and grazes.  This form of Propolis is also ideal for use as a steam inhalation to clear sinuses.

You can also use Propolis Tincture or Extract directly on to cut stems of rose bushes to prevent infection and die back.

Propolis Tincture has a food grade ethanol base so can sting when applied neat.  Propolis Extract has a food grade ethanol base which the alcohol content has been ‘burnt’ off (although it can still sting).

Propolis Throat Spray

This is a great way to combat sore throats while on the go, just a spray is enough to ease the tickle in the throat, clear the nose and freshen the breath.  The convenient small bottle makes it easy to carry and ideal for use on plane journeys where air conditioning can dry you out and germs can spread easily.

Use with Caution – never spill Propolis on clothing, it is almost impossible to remove except with pure alcohol but be quick.

Warning – Propolis used on the skin in its pure form may cause itchiness and swelling which can be overcome through dilution of the raw Propolis.  Internal reactions to Propolis are rare.  However, people with low blood pressure or low blood sugar levels should avoid taking Propolis (unless it have fist been mixed with honey and/or pollen which have the opposite effect as Propolis by raising blood pressure/sugar levels).  People with exceptionally high red blood corpuscle counts should abstain from taking Propolis internally.

Allergy test – If you have never used Propolis before and just want to be sure, place a small amount onto the end of your finger.  Please do not take any Propolis products internally without performing this simple test.  If no adverse reaction is noticed you should be fine to use both externally and internally.

Symptoms to be aware of when trying any of our Propolis products are redness or itchy skin, swelling of tissue in applied area and or sinuses upsets.

Anybody can be allergic to Propolis so we do recommend that you try our test first.
